Boy has it been a slow day on the trade front as one of the most over hyped days really hasn't lived up to any hype at all. In the last couple of years usually there has been more trades to report on by now but there is still time as deals always trickle in after the deadline.
It has been even quieter on the Flames front as absolutely no deals have been done. I would possibly still look for Cory Sarich or Scott Hannan to be dealt as a team like Detroit looks like they could use some depth on the blueline after they traded Mike Commodore earlier today to Tampa Bay and Jonathan Ericsson will be out a month with a wrist injury.
There have been some noteworthy trades today, here is some analysis:
EDMONTON OILERS TRADE D TOM GILBERT TO MINNESOTA WILD FOR D NICK SCHULTZ
I think this is a great trade for both teams with the upper hand going slighty to the Oilers. Schultz is a defensive defensemen who will add some veteran pressence to a very young Oilers blueline, which is only going to get younger in the coming years. Minnesota gets Gilbert who is a better puck moving defensemen than Schultz and will be looked to fill the shoes of Marek Zidlicky who was dealt to New Jersey last week. The veteran experience that I mentioned is why I give the Oilers the upper hand as Minnesota d-corps is also very young. Overall good hockey trade for both teams
CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS ACQUIRE D JOHNNY ODUYA FROM THE WINNIPEG JETS FOR A 2013 2ND AND 3RD ROUND DRAFT PICK
Chicago had been said to be looking for some depth on defense for sometime and added, in my eyes anyways, a very good 5/6 guy with Oduya who will be able to fit in nicely, possibly alongside Steve Montador, who is currently injured, and help reduce some minutes of some of the Blackhawks younger blueliners. The Jets add a couple draft picks in next years draft which is said to be deeper than this years, which will obviously help them build for the future and make sure they didn't loose Oduya for nothing. Oduya is set to become a UFA this summer.
This deal might have impacted the Flames earlier today as I think and hoped the Flames were possibly shopping their own upcoming UFA's in Scott Hannan and Cory Sarich
SAN JOSE SHARKS ACQUIRE F T.J GALIARDI, F DANIEL WINNIK AND A 7TH ROUND DRAFT PICK FROM COLORADO FOR F JAMIE McGINN AND TWO PROSPECTS
The San Jose Sharks didn't land the big shark they wanted in Rick Nash, not yet anyways but the Sharks didn't stand still as they acquired T.J Galiardi and Daniel Winnik to add some much needed depth up front. Galiardi and Winnik improve the Sharks top 9 as the Sharks also added C Dominik Moore from the Tampa Bay Lightning last week. For the Avalanche, Jamie McGinn will fill the shoes of Winnik while Galiardi became expendable, in my eyes, when they acquired Steve Downie in a three way trade with Detroit and Tampa Bay last week.
This trade can be connected with the Flames as it was rumored earlier the Sharks were kicking tires with the Flames about F Tim Jackman.
Just got a text from Newman saying the Flames indeed have re-signed Tim Jackman to a 2 year deal.
I think this is a great signing for the Flames as Jackman is a perfect 4th liner who is said to be great in the dressing room. Jackman will do anything for his team to win and he is the kind of guy who is under valued and so important for team success.
