Western Conference Champs! Canucks win 3-1 over Predators

Pekka Rinne almost stole the show. Almost.

Instead, it was the Alex Burrows show, as he scored two goals and the Canucks beat the Nashville Predators 3-1 tuesday night. It was tough, close checking game with a playoff atmosphere.

Both goalies were teriffic in this game, although one more than the other. Pekka Rinne of the predators made 29 saves, including fifteen in the third period in a losing cause. Roberto Luongo, the league leader in wins with 36, made 16 saves for the win.

The game started out just as you would expect in a Nashville game; low scoring, not alot of chances. It wasn't until fourteen minutes into the second period that the game saw some action, when Mike Fisher scored his eighteenth of the year to put Nashville up 1-0.

The Canucks responded early in the third. After some great pressure by the Sedin-Sedin-Burrows line, Henrik Sedin placed a perfect pass to a waiting Alex Burrows in front of the net. He fired home his 23rd of the year. Then, with a little under 3 minutes remaining in regulation and the Predators being out shot 17-2 in the final stanza, Burrows put a dagger in the heart of the Predators with his beautiful backhand top shelf breakaway goal. It was his 24 of the year, giving him four goals in his last seven games.

Journeyman blue liner Aaron Rome got his first goal in over 100 games as he put home a long empty netter to finish the scoring. With the win, the Canucks clinched top spot in the Western Conference for the first time in team history. Earlier this season, they got their first 50 win season in team history. They also lead the race for the Presidents trophy by 9 points.

Daniel Sedin had two points to extend his scoring lead to 8 points overall over Martin St.Louis and Henrik Sedin with 98 points.

In related news, Manny Malhotra underwent surgery in an attempt to save his eye. There will be no word on whether or not the surgery restored his vision completely for at least six weeks.
